I don't know much about Max MSP, however my understanding is that you can generate UDP commands from Max that will in turn control the Lanbox.
The Lanbox would be the central hardware control device that would control your various outputs.
Back to the question of multiple Lanboxes, If you have to drive 15 valves, you could do that through four / 4 channel relay packs. Relay packs such as http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/?sku=803168 could be used to drive secondary circuits for the solenoids. If for example the solenoids run on DC, a DC driver could be controlled through the outputs of the relay packs. This is where your hardware folks would come in.
