One feature common on several lighting desks, is the ability to connect an audio feed and use this for various lighting effects such as using the bass to trigger steps in a chase, or using the audio signal to generate a 'sound to light' pattern with different states being triggered on different frequency bands within the audio.

In general this does not work well, as most music is compressed, so triggers appear more or less random. You need a good audio analyze program in order to get decent results.

Is it possible to achieve the same thing with a LANbox (LCX)?

Only if you have a detection system (hardware/software), as you can use a analog input to trigger your chase steps. Also if you can generate a MIDI clock (quarter beat), the chase can trigger on it.

In the meantime, is there another way of doing it? I don't have any other show software at present but would consider a utility of some sort if it could do it. I am particularly interested in doing a bass chase for a forth coming show.

You could consider MAX/MSP, see http://www.cycling74.com/ If you know how the audio should be processed in DSP, MAX offers great possibilities.
