Hi there,

Does anyone know of a way to create a form of 'submaster' fader for the Lanbox, in software (LCedit+ or Max MSP) or via a midi contoller ?

Yes, in LCedit+ you can, although it's more like a master for n channels. Anyway just select the group you want the Intensities to be in the "sub-master" group.

Now the "Master Intensity" control is your sub-master. You can adjust the intensity between 0 and 199% (normal = 100%).

As for any master: DO NOT FORGET to set them back to 100% :-)

You can do this in MIDI with SysEx as well, but it's complex, as you must set the "gain" in postprocessing for each individual DMX channel, see "CommonSetGain" in the LC+ reference.
