what about 2 different modes:

1. 512 ch. x 20 f/s
2. 256 ch. x 40 f/s

is that easily doable with the help of firmware change?

Not easy, it requires re-compiling and a very good check on other timings. The number of output channels has no influence on this in the LCX, as it has DMA output of DMX.

Processing 3072 channels fading, mixing, with 31 layers is -the- time consuming issue.

also while on the subject - is 20f/s the maximum refresh rate or constant?

It's constant (very), see also http://www.lanbox.com/support/dmx-timing-v203.html

For instance if you only had to use 24 ch. then you would be able to strip down the rest of the channels and
achieve a dmx packet of 1.196ms lenght giving you a refresh rate of 836 frames a sec

Yes, but you have to make fixed 24ch firmware written in assembly :-(
