ok, it seems i've solved my own problem from a few days ago

for whatever reason, the lanbox turned out to be set to a speed of 9600, while 38400 is the 'out of the box' speed... of course it won't work, duh! if only i had known how to check for the lanbox speed before...

thanks to all who responded and to fokko van duin for pointing out the use of the little triangle next to the word "advanced" in lcedit+
