is there a way to get a BPM (via midi) to set the chaser speed of a layer?

No. The problem is that there is no real correlation between BPMs and chase speed. BPMs gives triggers in the LanBox at each quarter beat, so 120 BPM gives two triggers per second. Chase speed is a relative (%) value which can be set e.g. to 50% to 200% and when cue steps have a hold of 1sec, 100% is 60 BPM, but.... Even when the speed is the same, they will not be in sync with music!

So, the only way to sync a chase (or steps of a chase) on music, is using the wait option. Be sure that all holds together until next wait is shorter in secs then the highest 1/BPM*60, else you miss triggers.

For moving heads sweeps, start a chase at a chase speed which is slightly faster then the quarter beats, and you have nicely on music triggered sweeps. If you make some control cues (start chase with different speeds), you can start them with a single assigned keys.

I hope this helps,
