As I assume you are going to use MAX to trigger cues/chases/shows in the LanBox, there is not really a big difference in using serial or MIDI.

actually, all i'll be doing is controlling a rosco i-cue mirror which needs to reflect a video projection.
i'm not sure yet whether it would be easier to patch the controls fully in max or use cues/etc. the latter might mean a lot steeper learning curve as i don't know anything about setting up a lighting-show....

You only have to place a 16 bit generic trackball, and read the first few chapters of the tutorial.


The problem of direct control is that you need to make 16 bit data in order to have smooth and accurate movements.


hmmm hardcore 8 and 16 bit serial poking... haven't done that for a loooooong time... haha

It's not that difficult, have a look at the MAX LC+ Ser-USB example. I would develop and run on a PC with COM port, as it is a very small patch to control two (or 4) channels for pan and tilt.
