Subject[LCtalk] DMX control of digital images

Hi!

First of all: this topic is only partly Lanbox related, but since there seems to be so much show control knowledge present on this list I hope I can tap into it for some advice / ideas.

For an upcoming theatre performance & tour I will be using a LCM for controlling the lights. What I also need are 2 different feeds of digital still images (JPEG) to be displayed on (VGA) monitors. This image feeds also need to be controlled by DMX / LanBox. All I basically need to control is: 1 image forward / 1 image back and perhaps Jump to Image No xx.

I figured out 2 possible solutions, but one is not perfect, and I'm not sure about the other one, so perhaps someone here has advice or some kind of great idea.

1) Using 2 Wahlberg DMX controlled DVD players, since these can display JPEG images. The thing is that there might be a possible speed problem with this. I would like to be able to skip from image to image in a split second. Or at least in under 1 second per change. I'm afraid a standard DVD player like the Philips model they offer (the other one is out of budget range) might not be fast enough. Of course I've e-mailed this question to Wahlberg, but no answer as of yet. The transfer from composite video output to VGA is not a big deal. Perhaps someone here has such a DVD player and can comment on the speed when displaying JPEG images?

2) Using DMXhost and DMXlistener software by BTM Innovation (http://www.byremote.com.au/). Their software can receive DMX on one computer, output it over ethernet, and have other computers receive it from the ethernet network. Of course this is all familiar stuff, available from lots of companies, but their DMX receive (listen) software can trigger stuff on the receiving computer, including control of Powerpoint presentations. The thing with this is having to purchase, in addition to the software itself, an extra DMX IN adapter (unfortunately, afaik, it doesn't at this moment work with the DMX IN of a Lanbox LCX) and having to take 2 computers running Powerpoint and ethernet along on tour. All in all no problem, but it seems like a lot of hassle for such a basic thing.

There will possibly be around 500 images, and I want to program stuff like a burst of images and then 1 image every xx seconds, et cetera. I'd like to program cue sequences like this in LcEdit and run them in a specific layer, while the lighting runs in another layer. I'm at this moment not familiar with MAX, and am afraid that I won't have enough time to get into it for this specific application, unless it's really straightforward.

Also I looked at the Coolux Mediaplayer Lite. It's fairly priced for what it does (have been given a price indication of a little less 3x the price of an LCX ;-) for the Mediaplayer Lite), but for this project and budget the use of a full video server application for just displaying still graphics seems like overkill.

Regards,

Jorg Schellekens
