Now I can either tell the LCE to inject the values directly into the mixer, or to inject them into a layer. I am only using the LCE as a "dumb slave" device, so which approach should I take?

I've found that injecting into the mixer (rather than a layer) works best if using it as a "dumb slave". Only use the layer approach for special applications.

On a UI note, in LCEdit is there any whay of "selecting" an interface (to access its Global Settings tab) without having a fixture that points at it?

Not yet, but I too have requested it.
