On 15 Jun 2004, at 9:40 am, Fokko van Duin wrote (extract only): I must admit that the universe system of DMX sucks, but it's the only way to create more channels ;-) It seems to me that in the near future at least we will be using ethernet to get the data around the building and then use hardware, like the Lanbox, to convert to DMX at the point of need. Sure, dimming racks can/will use ethernet but there's a huge investment in moving instruments out there that rely on DMX, so it's not going to go away for a while. I guess with the new firmware, there's no reason why you can't set up parallel universes - i.e. 1-512 in Lanbox 1 and 1-512 in Lanbox 2. This is useful in a theatre where the only DMX connection is into the house dimmers and there is no other point where you can connect in scrollers etc. Obviously the house dimmers and scrollers would need to be on different channel numbers in that setup. My next task is to try out my Airport Express when it arrives next month. I am very excited about the possibilities of wireless. It will allow me to use my laptop in any part of the theatre when rigging, testing and plotting. I expect to run the show with a good old fashioned ethernet cable though! Regards, John
