One thing I have always found irritating (as a theatre person) is that when you move from one cuelist to another, all selected channels are lost. In the various layers of my show (generic/static fixtures, moving lights, scrollers, etc.) the first thing I do is create a cuelist for each layer and select all possible channels for the specific fixtures involved: channels 1-72 for generic/static, channels 101-154 for scrollers, 200-350 for moving lights, etc. I am then careful when plotting to select the correct layer before modifying any channels. This is a practice that I have adopted since first using the Lanbox, and it has served me very well over a number of shows. Everything is fine until you hit the end of your cuelist for a particular layer. So if I have reached step 95 of cuelist 100 for my 72 generic fixtures, I create cuelist 101 in the control window while in edit mode. If I then only go onto modify channels 1-10 in my next cue and hit record, only channels 1-10 will appear in the cue. This is fine if you always go through the cuelists in a forward direction. If you go backwards through the list - which can happen if the operator hits a cue to early in a live production and you need to go back a cue, or if you want to use a specific cue later on in the show again from a different position in the cue list sequence - then the results are unpredictable. My workaround for this is to perform the following: create a new cuelist and then grab all available fixtures for the appropriate layer. Hit 'v' on the keyboard followed by 'option-return'. This selects all available channels for the fixtures. I then record a cue for the new cuelist in step 1. Plotting can then continue normally from that point. In this case I just never actually use the 'dummy' cue created. I appreciate the release of the channels is a feature of the Lanbox rather than a fault but it does cause problems if you forget the above procedure. The inclusion of only the channels actually selected in a cue rather than all available channels is a feature that is similar to a 'movefade' on a Strand 5XX desk - a 'crossfade' always selects all available channels. I have to say that having spoken to a number of people who use Strand 5XX desks that not one of them really understood the use of a movefade and would certainly never use that feature! The purpose of this message is to see if there is a neater way of ensuring continuity of channel selection when plotting numerous cuelists. John Conry
