Greetings to everyone.
Getting the beats out of music from acoustical feed-in is certainly
an interesting mathematical exercise. However, I have the feeling
that there is a misunderstanding in terms here. Finding "one, two,
three and four" is not necessarily going to help you. Rather, what
you really want is a machine that reacts to the pulse of the music,
which is, in simple music, traceable from the dynamics. So,
basically, just a amplitude meter is enough. To diversify things, you
could add filters for different frequency ranges and some harmonic
analysis (tracing the fundamental tone). That should provide enough
data for various light effects. It's true that all this can be done
in Max/MSP.
