Does anyone have interesting links to information on how this is done? I guess it is possible to "listen" to the volume, and set dmx values according to this. But I'm thinking of more advanced things like connecting some dmx channels to the "beat", others to the "treble" etc. I guess this could be done by "listening" to well defined ranges in Hz from the music.

This is far more complicated then it sounds, but some people experimenting with MAX-MSP <http://www.cycling74.com/> by using the DSP for audio analyzing. Getting the beat out of music is extremely difficult, but there are some algorithms to get it fairly good.

Do you have any pointers to those algorithms? links to information, names of the algoritms (so that I know what to look for), ...

I use here a small box called "Micro Sync" from Red Sound <http://www.redsound.com>, which produces the beat from music with MIDI clock. The LanBox has some cues which triggers on the quarter notes. It works quite good on most music types, but sometimes you have to help by tapping the sync button.

I have used similar products. So actualy what I want to do is implement the hardware of those products into software.. Just need to know how they do it ;)

I hope this helps a bit,

sure.

thanks again,
Jan
