I want to use the LCX as the overall controller, and have a second universe output from the other box. I could use an LCM (as this also has the benefit of the "longer" DMX packets that some of the low cost fixtures prefer), but I don't need any of the other functions it has.

If you are proposing a cheaper "extender box via ethernet" solution then sign me up for one!

It's more then a proposal, we hope to have it in stock from beginning June ;-) It's called a LanBox-LCE and it has the same housing (and DMX timing) as the LCM. At the same time we will release new software which enables the LCX to support up to 3072 channels if used with multiple LCX/LCE "slaves" on an Ethernet network (so, up to 6 universes per LCX).

The LCE is still a full DMX controller as a LCM (including display and IR control), and can, besides being a slave for a LCX, also run cues from it's own memory as a LCM. Pricing is still a secret, but it's much lower then a LCX. ;-)

The LCX will be able to broadcast all 3072 channels, while any LCX or LCE can pickup a selection of channels in order to do the post-processing (soft patch, curves, slope) for another universe.
