Fokko, I was following that train of thought (looking in the device manager for clues as to the port and Xmodem status) then decided to try another PC (a W2K frankenstein box created with various parts). The LanBox was happy to upload the new firmware, and I was working again without delay. I think that the PC (an older Sony laptop running Win ME) that I was working on is ready for some maintenance (the problem began with a system crash, getting common with this machine....). I did connect the LanBox to the original computer to see if it would work, and all was fine. Ya know, very few companies make a product as good as the LanBox, and even fewer have support like yours.
