and YES, the message window (which i have been using to keep track of the connection and error messages) does indeed say "in bootstrap" and the indicator in the lower left of the box is "orange", what does this mean?

The bootstrap is the first phase of starting up your LanBox, which tries to execute the firmware. If it fails doing so (for example, because the upload was aborted, leaving the firmware incomplete in memory), it will stay in bootstrap. In this state the only thing you can do is upload new firmware.

sometimes the message says that it disconnected just as the upload process begins (during the NAK...NAK... process)

Very odd. Either your PC gets very confused or the LanBox does.. could you pay attention to the led-lights of the LCX during the attempted upload and tell me what you see? And do the NAK NAK messages start after a while of uploading, or immediately after XMODEM is started?

PS it might be a while until our next reply.. going to sleep now :)
