from what I know, you're not allowed to use DMX to trigger any kind of pyrotechnics in a theatre show.
I know some people will strongly disagree with this.....and don't sue me if you try this and blow the hair off someones head, but-

You can safely use DMX to trigger timing sensitive pyro effects as long as you have a human "key" in the chain.   The simplest way to accomplish this is to use the same pyro switching system you would use manually (as long as it operates from the same AC your dimmers output) and feed the switches via dimmers.

The efx won't fire unless you have your fingers on the button   (the button that normally fires the effect) "arming" the device.   The important point here is that you wouldn't push the button arming the pyro until everyone was clear of the danger area.
This is for simple firing systems......I'm well aware that there are multitudes of firing devices this won't work on due to the nature of how they operate.  It also gets more complicated if you need to fire several effects in rapid succession since you'd need to use multiple switching systems fed from multiple dimmer channels.

The reason this method would never be condoned by anyone offically is that it could easily be abused over time.   When it worked safely for a long enough period of time someone would eliminate the human safety key THEN the dmx would hiccup and hurt someone.   But it's really no different than what happens at theme parks when the operators get lazy over time and place rocks on the momentary safety arming switches in the areas they are supposed to be physically watching in case something goes wrong.
