OK, do the following:
1. connect with LCedit+ to your box
2. Do "Erase LanBox" from the menu
3. Do "Save LanBox Data" from the menu

Quit LCedit and turn off the box, and turn it a little later On.

Now start the MAX demo
1. After connecting, select Layer A (popup)
2. Move a slider, it will respond with 62s

Please read the reference manual about 8bit and 16bit commands!

Make in MAX a set8bit command ("*6500#") so you are sure a communication channel is in 8 bit command mode. LCedit+ puts a stream in 16bit, that's why you got question marks.

[is there just a -really- simple patch that controls a lanbox lcx in a really simple way, just to dim things up and down via a slider?]
The MAX demo is as simple as can be, but you can remove the 4 other commands (set eng seq, get eng status, get ch and Go). The four sliders are just doing what you want: Set ch 1..4 in Layer n to a DMX value.
