I heard that there are people trying to develop a beat detection algorithm in MAX. If they succeed you can have a really good working piece software to trigger on the beat of the music.

This would not be very difficult. It would depend on exactly what parameters of the music you want to mirror with light. On the other hand, I once saw a show in which the music midi output was directly plugged into the light console without any modification, and that worked, too, albeit on a somewhat undifferentiated basis.
