LanBox-LCX update

Hello everybody,

We just finished a brand new batch of LanBox-LCX controllers and we can ship these now. The housing is still made of thick aluminium so we still have an indestructible product, but we have made some changes. We decided to make our own extrusion mould so it would be easy for us to incorporate some convenient features. We are offering two extra accessories kits for the LanBox-LCX. First is a DIN-rail mount kit so you can easily position your LanBox on a standard rail, either in a vertical or horizontal position. Also, we have a truss connection kit so you can secure your LanBox to any 50mm or 2" tube. You can buy these directly from our webstore.

As you have probably seen, we are also working on the visual identity of our company, website and products. Also, we already have implemented more languages in this website. We will be working on this for the next few weeks and we should be completely ready with this before the exhibition in Frankfurt at the end of May.

I would also like to put our new reference manual in the spotlight. Wouter has been working for almost a full month on this document and now we have a brand new and comprehensive reference manual. You can use this manual if you want to control or fully program our LanBox-LCX using many other applications like Max/MSP, Crestron or AMX systems other then our LCEdit using TCP commands. If you require any assistance please let us know, we can always assist you if necessary. Our next mission is to rewrite the LCEdit manual and to add some useful youtube tutorials.

Best regards,
Eric

LCEdit for Lion and more news

We have an LCEdit for OSX Lion and more news

Hello Everybody,

Here we are, just arrived in 2012! We have had a couple of very interesting months and now, having everything organized again, we are ready for the new year. First of all, I am sorry that it took such a long time to release the OSX Lion version of LCedit and i'm afraid it is not completely finished yet.... However you can download a test version from our website, version 3.7.0a for Mac OSX Lion is online now. It works, but Art-Net is not yet implemented. The big issue here is not the actual writing of the software, but to get a proper version control in place and to organize many years of several software versions. But, all is ok now, we have an excellent version control in place so we should be able to go from this alpha version to a final version for Mac and Windows in no time. Thank you all for your patience.

Some more news... We will have a booth at the Pro Light and Sound exhibition in Frankfurt this year. The exhibition dates are March 21 to 24 and you are all most welcome to visit us. We are designing a booth that shows many of the solutions you can create with a LanBox. Pixel-mapping, RS-232 control, Analogue inputs, MIDI control, Lights and so on are demonstrated in a number of real world setups for you to try. Of course our staff will be there to answer all you technical and non technical questions.

Last but not least... We will also unveil two brand new products at the exhibition in Frankfurt. We are working very hard right now to develop these products and I will tell about it a bit more in the next coming months....

All the best for 2012!

Best regards,
Eric

Important LanBox news

It has been a very eventful few weeks. Our site has been off line for a while and we are back with a new site. My name is Eric and I am the eldest son of the creator of LanBox, my father Fokko.

Dear reader,

It has been a very eventful few weeks. Our site has been off line for a while and we are back with a new site. My name is Eric and I am the eldest son of the creator of LanBox, my father Fokko. I wish to take this opportunity to tell you what has happened.

In 1996 Fokko sold CDS electronics, a company he had founded with his wife Marja. Since then he focused all his energies on developing new products in his new company CDS advanced technology. I was 17 at the time and went to college at Technical University, Delft. We occasionally discussed shared interests such as various control systems for a variety of applications. Always driven to create solutions Fokko developed a new product: the LanBox-LC. Over a period of fifteen years he developed the LanBox into what it is now, the stand-alone light controller used all over the world.

Last week Fokko, creator and developer of the LanBox controller and 788 dimmer and founder of CDS advanced technology bv, died at age 62 from complications associated with his illness.

Even though everything went so fast, these last weeks we talked about everything including the LanBox and related products. It has been several years now that I graduated and started my own engineering firm Rinnic/Vaude. My company employs a team of fantastic people who work on great technological developments. Several of our special solutions operate with LanBox; we basically use the device every day. My involvement with my father’s project the LanBox has always been indirect. With circumstances providing an opportunity to explore documents, mails and photos it is becoming clear to me what a marvelous group of users has evolved with, e.g., Jon Daggett in the United States and Holger Friese in Germany, men who were involved from the start. The LanBox and dimmer are now used the world over. Great.

In the past few weeks I have been preparing to continue my father’s business, products and ideas. Several days ago my engineering firm became owner of CDS advanced technology bv. The new crew, including my brother Matthijs on embedded hardware design, Wouter Hekel on support & software, Reitse de Jong on design & styling, and Zeger van der Voet on graphics design, is ready for the future.

It will take a little time to get everything ready for new product releases. For the near future our offering will be confined to the LanBox-LCX, still a fantastic product without any real competition. Wouter provides the support; he uses the LanBox every day and is an agile creator of solutions. Starting 2012 we will be releasing a full line of new products. Fokko had completed a slew of new hardware designs, being always years ahead of the rest of the world. Expect many, many new products in the years to come.

Fokko’s cremation service will be on Friday the 4th of November.

Thank you so much for your comforting messages.

Eric van Duin

The 788-LD+ is a heavy duty compact quad 5 Amp dimmer pack, which complies to "isolated DMX512-A".

The 788-LD+ is a heavy duty compact quad 5 Amp dimmer pack, which complies to "isolated DMX512-A". With the new firmware v5, the 788-LD+ has ANSI E1.20 RDM support. This means that with a suited RDM controller, you can configure the pack (start DMX address, 8/16 bit personality, dim/switch channel personalities, etc.) from a distance location. Even the triac temperatures, and overloads can be seen on your (e.g. Enttec or AL) RDM controller. So, now you can put your dimmer near the lamps, and don't need to climb anymore to set the DMX start address!

The 788-LD+ is intended for applications where a compact, silent, and reliable DMX dimmer is required . See also data sheet and order form.
Four independent dim/switch channels.
8 or 16 bit dimming.
ANSI 1.20 RDM support.
100-240V, 50/60 Hz powered, GST18-3 plugs included.
Up to 5 Amp per channel, thermal and short protected.
Three-digit LED display, shows address, status, etc.
5 pole XLR connectors, complies to DMX512-A.
Very compact extruded aluminium housing

LCedit+ v3.4 released

LCedit+ v3.4 released

Most new LCedit+ features have to do with time/MTC action, and theatre applications. It's now e.g. possible to sync to MTC (or SMPTE) or real time. For theatre applications we added e.g. percent views, "soft" reset, and "soft" back.

In order to support the realtime and MTC clocks in the LanBox, LCedit's global setting are extended with several settings.

Also included is the newest firmware v2.06 for the LanBox-LCX, LCE & LCM, newest MAX-MSP externals with examples (incl Jitter Video2DMX), and Isadora video to DMX example.

LCX, LCE & LCM users should install firmware v2.06

New features of LCedit+ v3.4
Fade and hold time indicators with remaining time in min:sec.
Percent view option for the cuelist editor and the monitor window.
Columns in cast list and fixture setup patch list are now resizable.
Support for 16 bit wheel and button panels is added.
Added Martin MAC550-ext. This is the first definition using 16 bit intensity and gobo wheels.
Library is updated with many new fixtures, and the file names are pre-fixed with make name.
Hold until time/MTC is/transitions before/after d:hh:mm:ss:ff action added.
New Global LanBox settings for NTP server IP, time zone, clock tuning, and DMX clock addresses.
Many tooltips added.
LCedit+ v3.4 bug fixes

CLI keys are now working reliable, especially in the Windows version.
Font and general readability improvements.

What's new in LCX/LCE/LCM v2.06 firmware
IR remote control is now possible with remotes using Philips RC5, RC6, Sony 12, 15, 20, and NEC like IR protocol (like the Apple remote). It means you can now use many types of IR remotes to control a LCE or LCM.
The new firmware allows you to map IR keys to remote functions for 2 different IR remotes at the same time. The IR key map is written as a cuestep, so it can be exchanged with others. Default IR1 is Apple remote, and IR2 is the Sony RM-V202.
The IR Power or Menu key toggles between Home display (----) and menu 5 (layer/cues), this makes it possible to use minimal IR remotes (like Apple remote) to do Go, Go next, Go previous.
IR option Config code 0001 toggles between next and previous -step- commands or previous and next -CUE- commands.
IR remote auto repeat keys has been added to "edit" states like Cue number, Channel value, etc.
The LanBox TCP/IP stack has been made more robust, so it survives most common internet attacks like large UDP/ping packets, SYN connects, and others.
The CR fade bug, which molested the DMX value when a channel had the same value as previous in step, is fixed.
For theatre applications: Previous Cue can now use manual fade time (turn on manual fade type) to do the previous cue. This means that if you Go to next by accident, it can be corrected fast but smooth :-)
For theatre applications: "Reset Cue" (Go same step, shortcut: u <enter>), is also using the manual fade time when it's turned on. This can be used to go back to the original cue values after manual interference.
For theatre applications: Improved Fade and Hold time calculation.
Real time week clock is added. It can be set via DMX channels manually or via the Network Time Protocol. The used format is d:hh:mm:ss:ff, runs at 25 f/s and can be tuned for maximal accuracy when NTP can not be used.
MTC (SMPTE via convertor) clock receive is also added. It can be set via DMX channels manually or via the MIDI MTC protocol. The used format is d:hh:mm:ss:ff, and locks on 24, 25, 30, and 30DF f/s.
Both clocks can use DMX channels, so that time and MTC can be distributed via Ethernet to non-MIDI LanBoxes as well.
Hold until <locked> time/MTC is/transitions before/after d:hh:mm:ss:ff action is added.

Isadora with LanBox support

TroikaTronix has released Isadora 1.1b39 which has built-in LanBox RGB and LanBox Channels actors.

TroikaTronix has released Isadora 1.1b39 which has built-in LanBox RGB and LanBox Channels actors. Both actors uses the LanBox high speed UDP protocol to provide LanBox(es) of realtime video, translated to RGB DMX, and plain DMX data. As the video signal can splitted into any number of RGB DMX areas, near any type of RGB fixtures can be used. You can e.g. use a few RGB LED bars of 20 pixels each (or even different pixel sizes) to display areas of the original video stream.	Isadora with LanBox support [March 30, 2006], cont..

The LanBox RGB actor can be set to announce or write UDP packets to a destination or to broadcast it. The offset to the first used DMX channel can also be set, e.g. to leave some DMX space for normal fixtures.
As Isadora can manipulate video in many ways in realtime, it opens complete new ways of generating dynamic lighting. The Isadora LanBox examples are included from Isadora 1.1b39, but can also be downloaded from our site.

LCedit+ v3.3 released

The final v3.3 releases of LCedit+ software package for MacOS, OS X and Win2000/XP, can be downloaded for free.

The final v3.3 releases of LCedit+ software package for MacOS, OS X and Win2000/XP, can be downloaded for free. Most new features have to do with RGB (LED) fixtures and matrix setups. It's now possible to see the light intensity of a fixture -and- the resulting color of RGB fixtures on the stage.

In order to synchronize the layers of multiple LanBoxes with each other, we added layer broadcasting and layer sync. This makes it possible for large standalone running projects (architectural RGB pixel), to run in sync huge scenes distributed over multiple boxes .

Also included is the newest firmware v2.05 for the LanBox-LCX, LCE & LCM, and new MAX-MSP externals with examples.
New features of LCedit+ v3.3:

View menu: show color, hide labels added, so (RGB) lamps can be seen as a matrix display.
Group editor merge modes added.
New panel RGB (with color/intensity result).
New RGB fixture supporting color view.
Paste picture (or drag file) into (selection/group) control Intensity/RGB panels.
Pattern generator now also supports matrix RGB and single channels and color
Auto copy for path/pattern generator.
Reboot... menu action.
Go xx.x in layer zz action added (go in new layer)
Layer list scrolling relaxed.
Two new global UDP settings for layer synchronizing.
Updated LCedit+ tutorial.
Tiger (OSX 10.4) compatible
LCedit+ v3.3 released [April 26, 2005], cont..

LCedit+ v3.3 bug fixes
UDP IP fields in global settings made wider
11 buttons, now possible
Copy/paste empty step->crash solved
v alt-enter without selection: Exception Traceback solved
What's new in LCX/LCE/LCM v2.05 firmware

Added UDP layer broadcast and UDP layer synchronize

Changes in LCX/LCE/LCM v2.04 firmware

DMX values will be clipped to 255, when the result of a master intensity (with a setting larger then 100%) and current DMX value would become above 255.
Corrected the issue that scene values could be (partly) wrong, when a scene was written on an internal 64K boundary. This happened very seldom, and mostly with large scenes, but getting wrong data is -very- confusing.
Changes in LCX/LCE/LCM v2.03 firmware

Supports 3 flavors of DMX on the LanBox-LCX, LCE and LCM, details are at: dmx-timing-v203 but see also the discussions on the LanBox-Talk archive msg-01665
Sets MIDI bank select default to 0 after power up.
Solves a layer/display issue after "erase LanBox".
Corrected the off by one issue with UDP output of the DMX-in layer.
Corrected an issue with UDP input ranges in complex multi-universe setups.
Notes:
You can use the included "CDS pixel studio (USB).lcp" project file as an example for (RGB) matrix usage in a second stage window. Use the included cuelist 100 to see a generated bouncing RGB patterns.
